liposuction

Liposuction is an operation that can remove excess fat from chosen parts of the body. This is not a method of losing weight, but it can give the possibility of remodelling various parts of the body. It can change the shape and proportions of the body.

Planning for the operation is done during the consultation just before the operation, with very detailed marking of the body areas to be affected.

The parts of the body which are most commonly operated on in women are:

  • Abdomen
  • hips
  • sides of the trunk
  • lateral and medial parts of the thighs
  • medial part of the knees
  • lateral part of the arms
  • double chins

In men it is usually the abdomen and chest (fatty breasts).

Before the operation we use antibiotic profilactic and anti-thrombotic profilactic. The operation usually takes 2 to 3 hours and is done under general or epidural anaesthesia, and it is necessary to stay at the clinic for 2 to 3 days in total.

The operation itself is divided into 3 phases:

1. Very small incisions - 2 to 3 mm - will allow infusion of the pre-marked parts with a special liquid.

2. With the use of a Lipomatic or Micro-Air devices the fat is homogenised and together with the injected liquid this produces a thick liquid.

3. The thick liquid is then removed using a special suction device.

After the operation small incision points are stitched with very small stitches which are removed after 6 to 8 days. Special elastic underwear is put onto the patient's body to make sure there is good adherence of the skin to the body, and allows the skin to contract and reduces the swelling. This special underwear needs to be worn for 6 weeks - in the first 3 weeks day and night and in the next 3 weeks either in the day or night.

On the first day after the operation you will be given a special lymphatic massage and this kind of massage you will need to have everyday for at least 15 days after the surgery. The first massage is free but subsequent massages need to be paid for at the clinic and can also be easily arranged in the U.K..

In the first few days after the operation you might feel some pains but this can be easily dealt with using Paracetemol tablets. Gentle exercise should be introduced in the first few days after the operation but excessive exercise should be avoided for about one month.

You should avoid going to a solarium for about 6 weeks.

You can return to work usually a few days after surgery.

Because of the large amount of swelling after the operation the result of the liposuction is visible as follows:

After 3 weeks - 20-25 % of final effect

After 6 weeks - 50-55 % of final effect

After 12 weeks - 90-95 % of final effect

We therefore do not recommend buying new clothes until 3 to 4 months after the surgery. You must also remember that surgery gives only about 60 % of the final effect - the rest is given by the massages, a sensible diet and exercise - the massages being the most important.
